I don't believe that the position of storage is as important as
inspecting the extinguisher every month or so. As part of my job
with the U.S.Forest Service for many years, I inspected heavy
equipment for safety and fire hazards. I used to turn the F/E over
and solidly thump the bottom of it a couple of times to loosen the
powder inside.

With F/E's in environments that vibrate (Trawlers and heavy
equipment) the compaction of the contents would take place.

 I would think that it would be a good idea to add this process to
your boat (F/E) inspection list. When you want it to work.....you
want ALL of it to work.
