Franks points about Passagemaker are well taken. However, I did find that
their side-by-side comparison useful. For example, now, in the 400, you can
gain access to the generator. This is good.
Basically, between the lines, the article seems be be saying - for $50,000
more you can get a better designed 390.
There are US magazines that do give some indicies of meaningful comparison.
For example, at least two magazines give helm decibel ratings as well as
fuel gph and gpm(ile) at different rpm. The latter tells you something about
the hull design and the former gives you an idea of attention to detail.
If you have not read the Sea Ray "wet core" controversy in
"Powerboat-Reports" you have missed the epitome of what you are seeking.
They have documented cases of wet balsa cores in many of the larger Sea Ray
models. Sea Ray has made enigmatic responses. Next issue will have a
response from the President of Sea Ray. They got onto the story from
subscriber letters. Of course, they do not accept advertising and the
periodical costs much more than an advertising-based magazine.
