Subject: TWL: LED flares

<<Has anyone seen the LED flares mentioned back in November?
They were on display at Fish Expo.
According to reports these are supposed to be visible at 10 mile or more
range when pointd in the direction of the search aircraft.>>
These are LED lasers, similar to the pointing instruments used by conference
lecturers. They are fitted with a beam expander that turns the dot into a
line and are encapsulated in a cigar sized waterproof case. When pointed at a
rescue aircraft and moved back and forth, they give the appearance of a flash
of light visible for many miles. Basically they are the equivalent of a
signalling mirror, but one that can be used in the dark. The downside is that
the rescuer must be looking in the right direction to see the flash, unlike
flares which can be seen by peripheral vision. They also demand that the user
be conscious and alert enough to accurately point the beam, unlike more
passive lights and strobes. But then nothing's perfect.
