John also indicated that he could see some sulfate deposits on the plates
when he toppe dup the water.

This sulfate acts as a resistance to the flow of charging current and
results in internal heating.
This heating is why the water evaporates from the battery and has to be
replaced.

When the sulfate is removed, the internal resistance of the battery is lower
and internal heating is reduced during charging.
This in turn means lower water consumption.

John mentioned that he had not equalized his battery bank.
Even if only 1% of the sulfate is left remaining after each recharge cycle
it doesn't take long for a 10 - 15% accumulation to exist.
