Dear Andy,
As has been already stated, equalizing is a controlled
overcharging of flooded lead-acid batteries in order to disolve
and otherwise remove (flake off) lead-sulphate from the plates.

Mark is stating something that many people accept as conventional wisdom.
However, it contains a mis-leading suggestion.
Lead sulfate is the normal result of the elecrto chemical process taking
place inside a lead acid battery.
Recharging is the process by which lead sulfate is converted back into lead
oxide and sulphuric acid.
The last thing you want to do is "flake-off" any of the plate material.
This is called shedding and drastically reduces the amount of material
available to produce current.
"dissolving" is a description which fits what is visually observable but is
misleading if you wish to understand the real process taking place.
When electrons are removed from a battery as current flow the result is the
combining of atoms of both lead and sulphur.
If you want more detail look up valence rings in a chemistry book.
Sorry about the nit pick but I feel the misleading terms gives people the
wrong impression and this leads to misunderstanding as to what really takes
place.

Arild
