Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.
The general consensus was that a water heater with two internal coils would
adequately transfer heat between the engine and the hydronic heating system,
albeit with some loss of efficiency because you are using the water in the
water heater as a transfer medium.
I don't see where the dual coil water heater has any advantages over a
single coil water heater and a separate heat exchanger for the engine /
heating system interface, other than perhaps saving a little engine room
space. In fact, it probably has several disadvantages. The dual coil
water heater is pretty expensive, so cost savings does not factor in.
Separate pieces would be easier and less costly to replace in the event of a
failure. Also, I really dislike the engine coolant hoses disappearing out
of site under the engine to cross the engine room to get to the water
heater. A local heat exchanger would keep those hoses very short and in
plain sight. Let the hydronic system hoses be out of site of necessary.
The system Ed inherited that has the engine cooling and hydronic heating as
one big system would be worrisome to me. Sounds like Ed is handling it well
with his pre-cruise checks and alarm points, but this would not be an option
for me. The cost of the heat exchanger interface between the two systems
would be well worth the peace of mind it would bring.
The bottom line is the dual coil water heater is not a consideration. A
single coil water heater will do just fine, and this opens up more purchase
options for that. The engine / hydronic system heat exchanger will be part
of the heating system and purchased with that equipment.
Again, thanks to everyone. Helped clear up some things and point me in the
right direction.

Andy
