Subject: TWL: Re: Cellular Antennas For Boats

My cell service is supposed to cover the area and marina where my trawler
is docked, but the signal is very weak. The usual efforts to exchange
phones and program via software the tower that serves the area have
failed, so I have to figure out the best way to boost my signal strength
from 1 bar to 5 bars on my Nokia.
Shakespeare, whose products are consistently of high quality, offers
three cellular antenna models for boats, all with a 3 dB gain. Will any
of these suffice to increase my signal strength and range for reception?
The decibel measurement rating always refers to the increased
transmitting power or output side and not the input side.
How much better will these marine antennas perform than the average
automobile external antenna? The external automobile antennas sell for a
fraction of the cost of a marine antenna. It is my understanding that
cell phones do not require a ground plane, so why wouldn't the average
automobile antenna work?
It is a puzzlement.
