I just finished removing and cleaning the salt water side on my port engine.
I clean the copper alloy 1 1/2 inch pipe, fuel cooler(Detroit Diesel needs
to cool the fuel after it passes thru the engine or the tanks get too hot),
and heat exchanger with muriatic acid. I mix the acid as per General Motors
recommended mix which I do not remember for sure so check but I think (about
25% acid/ 70% water and 5% Oxalic acid?, I cannot find any of the Oxalic and
don't seem to need it). I will test the heat exchanger with air pressure
when I'm finished and ready to re-assemble, next month. In 30 minutes the
exchanger is sparkling clean. And there is no metal loss. My feeling is that
if a weak acid bath makes it leak, you certainly did the right thing, chuck
it.
BTW use extreme caution when using acid. Although muriatic is weak acid, it
is still hydrochloric acid and will burn skin and eyes. The admiral will
love the holes you made in the rug. Rinsing should take an hour or so, it
takes a long time to rinse acid off metal.
The hoses are thrown away, but I noticed that one had a slight kink just as
it exited the motor from the heat exchanger. This slight crease was almost
clogged with deposits. It had to be clogged by 50% or more. I saw this
before but did not think it was any where near restricting. Looking closer
at the system any where there was a flange or electrode or turn the deposits
were fairly substantial. Also wherever salt water sat at the bottom of a
hose the hoses where near failure. Unfortunately I just bought the boat so
do not know how long they were on. Except it was too long.
Of course, with all the deposits (the exchanger looked like it was solid and
resisted removal)hose restrictions and several impellor blades stuck in the
inlet, the port motor would run wide open and not overheat. I found out GM
used the same exchanger on the 6 as they did on my 4 popper. I like that, I
can always use a little lee way.
