Howdy All...
Since this thread became a little contentious I went out and looked for
myself at a few Marine Trader / CHB trawlers that were for sale in the Bay
Area. One in particular, a 1979 41' sedan (I guess you'd call it a europa)
really stood out. It was used but very clean. Equipped with twin 120hp
Lehmans. The port engine had 700 or so hours, the starboard 800 or so.
There was a genset (couldn't find hour meter on unit or dash) but no a/c.
The salon floor needed refinishing and the cushions could all stand new
upholstery. The decks were painted over with a nonskid product and there
was little or no evidence of water leads anywhere that I could see. The
bilge was absolutely dry and you could eat off the engines. There was no
evidence of blisters above the waterline. The fuel tanks were original iron
with the acoustic tile glued all over 'em as reported here on the TWL. The
salon exterior had nary a visible crack although some older repairs were
evident but of good quality.
Most of the equipment was not current generation and such things as battery
chargers, the genset and all the electronics could stand to be replaced.
The radar antenna was mounted in front of the flybridge (does anyone smell
something burning?). There was a 9' RIB w/o motor but evidence of a motor
having been carried on the boat deck rail on a storage block.
There was no need to turn lights on in the bilge since so much sunlight
filtered through the hull fiberglass. I don't know what to make of that. I
built boats at the Thunderbird factory in N. Miami when I was a teenager and
don't remember translucent fiberglass but we gelcoated the exteriors and
painted the interior surfaces after bedding the bulkheads and stringers.
Anybody have any thoughts?
Here is what prompted me to post: The boat was listed at 115K and was
reduced to 98K. If I had the money available I'd have bought it on the spot
(contingent on a decent survey). Think about it. We're looking at new
boats costing upwards of 500K, some of which are 35' LOA. I'm thinking, if
well cared for, there is a lot of coastal cruiser for the money in these MT
/ CHB boats.
Thanks for listening...
