I'd be willing to bet money that what Kurt is seeing in the farm ponds is
not copper sulfate (although it is used for algae control) but instead is a
product called Aquashade. It is a blue dye that is deliberately used in
concentrations that cause the pond water to turn blue. Its purpose is to
"shade" or filter out enough of the insolation (sunlight penetration) to
reduce algal growth. It is used specifically because it is not toxic like
copper compounds. If enough copper sulfate was used to cause the pond to
turn blue, nothing would survive.
