essential. Even at sea on passage, with Radar going--we have a rule that at

Ship channels--that becomes every minute. Lots of folks don't pay attention
to all that is going on around them when "driving" the boat.

Some of us have peculiar problems with visibility that are hard to solve with
conventional flying bridge enclosures. My Willard motorsailer has an upper
steering station amidships, to the right of and slightly behind the mast. All
sailing controls and engine controls are available to the helmsman and
visibility, 360 degrees of it, is unexcelled. Unfortunately, the presence of
the boom swinging overhead precludes the use of a bimini or any other
enclosure. An unexpected jibe and the entire structure would be swept
overboard. And when it rains, you get very wet.

The boat has a nice pilothouse where it can be steered in foul weather but
visibility to the stern is minimal. Our solution to impeded rearward
visibility was to fabricate a pilothouse companionway door entirely out of
5/8" plexiglass. It cost a few bucks but now one can see to the rear just by
turning around and stay dry and warm on those cold wet days.
