Hi Brent,
The proper term is "Mailing List"; you could also call it an "Interactive
Mailing List" or an "Internet Mailing List".
Trawler World List is NOT any of the following:
Newsgroup - newsgroups come in two flavors Moderated and Non-Moderated but
in either case there is far less oversight WRT content, format, or
membership. That typically leads to spam, trolls, flame wars, and out of
control quoting (There are newsgroup users who think that it's fun to quote
& re-quote messages for the sole purpose of generating >>>>>'s. Go figure!)
Website - While you can read TWL on the web via the archive or Mike
Harrington's "HTML Digest" that doesn't make this a Web forum. On a web
based forum you typically HAVE to visit the website in question to read or
respond to posts. With TWL that is only one of several options. Another
difference is that with TWL you use your own email program (on or off line)
to compose messages while most web forums require you to use their editor
(usually on line only).
Chat - The term "chat" sort of implies interaction among users who are
on-line at the same time. This could be a problem if you ask a question and
the guy with the answer is 10 time zones away from you.
In reality I've found that these distinctions are mainly important when
someone is trying to describe a posting problem and we're trying to figure
out just what he's actually saying.
Semantically yours,
Alex
