While on the subject of fuel efficiency, which is to say hull efficiency,
what's the story on catamaran hulls? They appear to be very
efficient. Catamaran sail boats obviously go much faster than full
displacement ones despite having the same power source.

Are catamaran hulls more efficient than full displacement for some reason,
or is it simply that they're typically built much lighter and thus have a
better length to displacement ratio?

Do power cats have better hydrodynamic efficiency than full displacement
trawlers at hull speed? Or better efficiency than semi displacements at
15kts say? Some of them I see go past at speed don't seem to make much
wake which I take to be a sign of efficiency.

Just curious.... I have no direct experience with catamarans other than
sailing little Hobies.
