I just installed a Furuno Radar/Chartplotter this spring. I got the 10"
screen, color model with C-map. I'm very pleased with the unit so far. I
also have a couple of monochrome displays on the flybridge ( a Lowrance GPS
& Interphase Probe). The color Furuno has much better visibility in sunlight
than the monochrome. The Lowrance almost is impossible to see in direct
sunlight. Love the color!
I also debated the 7" vs the 10". I'm also very happy I went with the 10".
In a split screen situation, (most of the time) you still have a big enough
image to see what's going on in both the chartplotter & radar . I even spent
the extra $$ for the heading sensor to do the overlay, but haven't really
seen any advantage to that feature yet. I'm guessing in a heavy fog in close
quarters, it might help find markers, ect I maybe help distinguish between
markers & other targets.
I visited the Navionics & the C-map booths at the Miami boat show, &
preferred the C-map, although right now I don't remember all the reasons for
that decision. I think I had so many decisions to make at that point, that
once I made one, I wrote it down & forgot about it. On to the next one!
I also went with a 6kw, 4ft open array antenna. Keep in mind that this is my
first radar so I have no frame of reference, but it seems to work very well
in close range as well as storm tracking at longer distances.
