Hi, Rick. They are more likely organic stains. Two sources are red algae
(dinoflagellates) which, when they "bloom", cause the water to become a dark
mahogany color. Another source is blackwater areas that have a lot of
tannins in the water. Either way, oxalic acid works well. The absolute
quickest working stuff I've seen is MaryKate's On & Off which, I believe
contains Phosphoric acid, muriatic acid, and oxalic acid. But, then coming
up with a home made version of this stuff is what started this thread. ;o)
