Subject: TWL: Re: Question about radar location

WELL, I had a 4KW Raytheon dome on my 37' cutter. The location (height) was
determine for me by my sailmaker. He worked out that 11' above deck would
allow adequate sail clearance. The custom, non-gimbaled mount grasped the
mast like two hands. It was machine-screwed into tapped holes in the mast.
It also had a SS rail going around and outside of the mast.
One day, the spinnaker bail came off the top of the mast and the huge
"drifter" I was using fell with the bail and reattached itself to the radar
mount. We sailed like that for about half an hour until we found a place
where we could head up and douse the sail.
Lesson: His radar should never have come off the mast and shouldn't have
been fouled on a tack in the first place.
Recommend that you place your antenna on your mizzen mast because I think
that your Rhodes is a ketch. A gimbaled mount is nice if you can insure that
the radar cable does not chafe through! I never had a problem with the sails
"masking" the radar. There is a small dead space directly behind the mast.
Heeling wasn't much of a problem, but the primary use of my radar was at
night when motorsailing with full-battened main us and no foresail.
