The way these gauges work is that the sender is basically a potentiometer
or variable resistor. A lot like the volume control on your radio. In GM
automobiles the fuel senders are always 0 to 90 ohms of resistance. O
resistance or grounded is Full and 90 ohms is empty ( I could have it
backwards because it has been a long time). The actual resistance varies
between gauge manufacturers and that is why you have to use VDO senders
with VDO gauges.

If the wire is still grounded then you simply have to put it back on a good
sender. The cheapest and easiest way to diagnose these things on a twin
engine boat is to simply swap port to starboard and see if the problem
follows the part you swapped. Have a great trip, I am jealous but maybe
next year!
