There is really no definitive answer to your question regarding radar screen
size and charts. If you are concerned, best bet is to view these
alternatives-either in the store or on a neighbors boat. Screen size depends
on how you use your boat. 7" should be fine. More important, perhaps, is dome
vs open array....the latter having better target discrimination (narrower
beamwidth).
I have furuno 7" black & white for my flybridge (48 ft Hatteras yachfish)
with a 24" open array on a radar arch. Works fine for me in dense fog in
Maine & Nova Scotia. My primary use is collision avoidance with other craft
within two miles or under and spotting buoys in critical areas. I use DGPS
and WAAS for 99% of my navigation. The cabinet I put it in would not hold a
10" anyway.
The majority of commercial boats in Maine use Furuno, Nova Scotia favors
Raymarine.
I use C-MAP NT+. and find them just dandy. Am not familiar with Navionics.
