All of our electronics are protected at the lower helm. Most of our
piloting (driving) is from the upper helm. Even in good weather, piloting
from the upper helm, the pilot can get confused. When this happens, the
Admiral (usually) is assigned the pilot duty from the upper helm while I go
below to check the electronics. We also take the paper charts to the upper
helm, in good weather, lay them out and pilot with them. In really bad
weather we are at the lower helm anyway.
BTW, it is really helpful to have a VHF with a remote microphone, thus an
intercom, between the upper and lower helm. Make communication much easier.
