Before I tried to fix that, I'd really like to know why it failed in the
first place. The problem with making diesel tanks from aluminum is that if
the wrong welding rod is used, or poor technique, then the welds fail and
dump diesel in your bilges. The question in your case of course, is
whether the other welds are in danger of letting go too? If so then
perhaps it's not worth fixing what you've got and you should just start
over. If in fact they were welded properly in the first place, then they
shouldn't have failed where they have already.

I'm told U.S. government boats use aluminum diesel tanks, but the welds
have to be done by people certified for that work. Your local welding shop
probably believes if they can weld aluminum, then they are capable of
welding up aluminum diesel tanks, but I'd be somewhat skeptical.
