Al,
The pictures I have of a sea chest system are those actual installations
posted here in response to my query, and what I have in my head. If you can
visualize a square tube about 6" to 14" square or more depending on your
flow needs, sort of like a chimney, standing vertically through a hole in
the bottom of the boat (scarey, huh!). The top of the tube is above the
water line so the water level is the same inside the tube as outside the
boat, but still below the top of the tube. A clear plexiglas cap is
attached to the top of the tube for inspection and to prevent water
splashing out, but hinged or removable so you can reach in and clear debris
from the thru-hulls from the inside of the boat. All thru-hulls and sea
cocks for each application are installed on the sides of the tube inside the
boat but below the water level. A grate can be attached over the opening in
the bottom of the boat to keep larger critters out.
The manifold system is different in that a single large thru-hull is
installed with a seacock and strainer large enough to provide for all sea
water needs, followed by a chamber with taps for the various on board
systems. It is my understanding, however, that main engine(s) should be on
their own thru-hull and not shared.
Hope this helps, if you have access to a fax machine and want to send me
your fax number off list I will make up a sketch for you.
