TWL: Teak decks

We would love advice and opinions from all of you who have experience with
teak decks.
We purchased our 1986 Albin 43' trunk cabin in January and will no doubt be
working for years to "fix" the things we would like to fix as we enjoy using
it and showing it off. This includes the teak deck, which looks lovely --
silvery gray and no obvious problems. (Note the word "obvious.")
The previous owner did not hesitate to replace wooden plugs with stainless
screws. The fact that the screws and the plugs are at equal levels lead me
to believe that plugs never covered those screws, but they were added later.
They're all over the place, and every time I convince myself it's not so bad
I start counting, and it's rampant!!!!!
We knew when we bought the boat that we would have to address the decks
sooner or later, but seeing the gleam of stainless we think it might be
sooner.
What impact on the integrity of the teak decks do those screws have? How
does it impact the removal of the decks and the re-glassing and re-surfacing
of the decks? It seems that the only leaks that we have right now (and they
are very minor) are associated with the decks, and we suspect that it
happens primarily around the water fills, the fuel fills, etc.
Advice? Suggestions? Corrections on my assumptions?

Thanks,

Peggy Carr
