While single line diagrams are useful in providing a system overview; how many builders currently provide construction drawings that show the location of junction boxes,
tees and other layout details not evident in a single line diagram.
For example the electrical diagram may show the outlets as simply one line and a notation that a GFCI is used. Or it will show six lights as being for the salon.
What it doesn't say is where the wire is actually routed to get from the circuit breaker panel which is below decks to the overhead and where the wires are run and where
the split into port and starboard is located.
Typically, a single line diagram will not show the return path to ground. Nor will the diagram show actual power consumption in each branch.
You will not know if a particular circuit has enough reserve capacity to add another six lights or if you need to include another breaker.
I have yet to see any electrical diagram document the exact location and path of the various radial bonding jumpers. This fact may explain why it is not uncommon to find
ground loops and tray current flow, even in new boats. Such errors can cause problems.
