Gee you guys seem to have received a wealth of information on your vessels
while me --- all I got was a couple of pages (a notebook about 3 X 5) of
pencil notes that the previous owner stated -- I think this is how it works
!! <grin>
At least in my case everything got torn out in the refit and replaced so now
I have copious pages of data both hard copy and on disk for the inner
workings of the old girl.
I would suggest that as one works on their vessel they make notes that can
be kept on board and are marked and easily located so that "someone" can
operate your vessel should you become incapacitated. It would not take long
to accumulate a complete set of operating instructions for your boat if
every time you did something "routine" you made note of how one would
duplicate your manoeuvre. This would also include just normal start and stop
instructions and where each device was hidden, its circuit breaker / switch
and how it should operate. Also it is very important not to "hide" breakers
and switches but rather have them visibly labelled.
I know it seems second nature to most of us when we are doing the operating
but a few years ago I was involved with the Coast Guard, in attempting to
get power to the anchor winch on an unoccupied vessel which was dragging
(no, drifting was more like it 'cause the chain was vertical off the bow!)
and it took three of us about 10 minutes of actually almost tracing the
cables to find the circuit breaker, hidden under the footrest at the helm !
By the time we did find it and get things under control the boat was almost
on the rocks 'cause the Zodiac that the Coast Guard came in could not do
anything against the wind and a 50 ft vessel.
Just one more thing to give thought to over a long weekend.
As usual, just my Canuck $0.02 worth
Happy Cruising
