TWL: Alternator failure

I have a Prestolite (Leece Neville) 70 amp alternator that began giving me
trouble--jumping between normal output (14 volts approx) to none, based upon
voltmeter readings. It has a changeable regulator fastened onto the case
that I have already changed with no good result. I've been told that an
alternator should generate a magnetic field strong enough to pull a small
screwdriver, etc. to it if it is being excited. Mine does not seem very
excited! There is good power and connections from battery to the alternator.
Any suggestions, or is it off to the alternator shop on Tuesday?

Michael
