A relatively simple way to avoid having to remember to
unplug the cell
phone or other device from the 12 volt receptacle when
starting the
engine is to put a silicone diode in series with the 12 volt
line. The
diode must have a current carrying capacity at least as
large as the
breaker controlling the socket. That way current can flow
out of the
socket but not in. The penalty for this is a small voltage
drop through
the diode which should be irrelevant for most applications.
Remember
when mounting it that the diode will generate heat when
current is being
drawn. If you use a Schottky diode the voltage drop will be
on the
order of 0.3 volts. One possible choice would be Motorola
1N5831 rated
at 40 volts, 25 amps.
