In order for NDI to enforce these annual upgrades, there _has_ to be an
agreement between NDI (and other vendors of electronic charts) and the
developers of the navigation program that are used to display the charts.
For instance, my copy of Marinemap requires the charts to be in the clear
and is happy to display my NDI charts that I put on my disk before this
copy protection was introduced and those that I put there after I had to
call for a serial number.
Things will get interesting when the dominant player, Nobeltec, gets in bed
with the vendors of charts (itself and others) to enforce annual upgrades
of charts. This is a good reason to support secondary vendors of
navigation software in order to keep everyone honest.
