TWL: GPS accuracy

It is my subjective opinion that standard GPS (non WAAS, non differential)
is more accurate now than ever before.

On the trip around Van Isle, we travelled in fog and based on our
accumulated experience, successfully did some extremely tight blind
navigation in hundred yard fog. My Garmin III was noticeably better that the
boat's same age Magellan so we used the Garmin handheld. My experience with
this Garmin GPS has been mixed so I started with a healthy respect for the
acceptable error circle. We did take care to change the horizontal datum to
match the chart in use.

We found overnight error circles as small as the length (32') of the boat.

Does anyone else find that standard GPS has tightened up considerably in
accuracy this year?

The tempting result of this is that one can cut straight lines through the
west coast rock piles, getting shelter sooner by keeping kelp between you
and the big waves.
