My Willard 30 had an ancient Aquameter depthfinder with a slave readout at
the upper steering station. The main unit failed last year and I was unable
to get it repaired. In a desperate effort not to run aground, I installed a
Humminbird SX100 bought at the local WalMart for less than $100. The boat was
in the water so I simply stick the transducer to the inside of the fiberglass
bottom in a glob of silicone. It worked the moment I turned it on and reads
depths to 180 ft, the maximum I expect to encounter in Atlantic coastal
cruising. This year I decided I wanted a depth indicator at the upper
steering station. When the Humminbird Pirahna 2 depthfinder went on sale at a
local Boat US store for $79 I figured that it might be preferable to getting
a slave readout. To save installation trouble I mounted the new transducer
alongside the older one, also in a glob of silicone, assuming that I would
never use both at the same time to avoid interference. I needn't have
bothered. Through a bout of forgetfullness, I turned on both depthfinders at
once and both worked perfectly. If any setup would cause interference, mine
certainly would. Both units were by the same maker, both used the same
transducer frequency, and both transducers were mounted less than an inch
apart on the same section of hull. On the basis of a one trial experiment,
I've come to the conclusion that depthfinder interference is an imaginary
problem. Bob, you are right again.
