Subject: TWL: Chesapeake cruising Notes

Here are some comments on Chesapeake Bay marinas and anchorages gathered
this past June and July and not mentioned in the cruising guides.
1. Wicomico River. Anchored inside G "23" in soft, black mud. Tug/barge
traffic after dark. If your looking for the ICW "mustache" on your bow to
impress your cruising friends this is the river for you.
2. Salisbury, MD. Port of Salisbury Marina $0.50/ft, 30A @XXX.XXX
Nice clean marina and rest rooms. Brew River Restaurant adjacent to marina
has best mai tai's I've had on the Bay, er, also good food. Other
restaurants about five block walk.
3. Navy targets south of NAS Patuxent River have been active the six
times we have been in the area and the the range safety boats were very
assertive and willing to move one out of possible harms way. Dahlgren, VA
weapons proving area was active the two times we passed through. Whatever
they were firing was impressively loud. For both these areas stay alert on
channel 16.
3. Breton Bay, MD on Potomac Rv. We were the only one there anchored in
hard mud at 11 feet.
4. Port Tobacco River. Again alone anchored in Goose Creek in hard mud
at 8 feet.
5. Cobb Island. Shymanskies Marina. Slip fee $30. Restaurant closed
Monday and Tuesday. Heads and showers real decrepit and shabby looking. I
wanted my genset looked at and to get a mechanic one had to complete a work
order and then in several days the mech. would be by to look at it. I
passed on this opportunity. Granted I did not have an emergency. We ate at
Capt John's Crab House across the street with medium size steamed crabs
$35/doz.
6. Dennis Point Marina, Drayden, MD. $1.00/ft, 30 A @XXX.XXX
Diesel $1.40/gal. Pool $5.00/day/person. Pay close attention to the channel
markers entering and leaving this marina.
7. Smith Island. Smith Island Marina. New marina with clean "like home"
heads and shower. Slip fee $1.00/ft with water and electric. We entered
from the west (Bay side) and polished the bottom of Ebb Tide vicinity of G
"15". I made the wrong guess as to which side to pass a stick stuck into
the mud. Made a similar mistake with another stake on leaving to the east
(Tangier Sound) side. I found the entire passage eastward a white knuckle
event with the depth finder alarm set for 2 ft. going off frequently. Was
told by a local that there are plans to dredge the channels this fall. I
have no intentions of returning there until they do.
8. Crisfield, MD. Somers Cove Marina. $1.00/ft, 30A @XXX.XXX As
advertised a large, well run, well equipped marina with good restaurants in
walking distance.
9. Onancock, VA. Onancock Wharf Marina. $0.90/ft, 30A @XXX.XXX
Diesel $1.20/gal. Restaurants a short walk up the hill from marina. No
provisions nearby.
10. Cape Charles, VA. Cape Charles Marina. $0.75/ft 30A @XXX.XXX
New marina with limited transient spaces. No heads or showers. "Porta
Potties" available about 1/2 mile from where we were berthed. Restaurants
and provisions about 3/4 mile away across the RR tracks.
11. Norfolk, VA. We stayed two nights at the Navy Norfolk Sailing Club
marina. Any listees with U.S military privileges may contact me direct for
transient facilities. We spent a day at Norfolk Waterside looking over the
battleship Wisconsin and museums. Impressive.
12. Kilmarnock, VA. Chesapeake Boat Basin marina. $0.85/ft, 50A @
$7.00/day. Marina seems to be in the process of rebuilding under new
management. Nice heads and showers with rickety docks and slips.
13. Just a note on crabs in the Bay. I feel certain that there are a
lot less crab floats(pots) out there on the water this year than in the
past. I also have heard that Maryland has increased the size limit by 1/4"
for hard crabs and I do know that they have increased restrictions on times
for taking crabs. IMHO the Chesapeake Bay fisheries are not inexhaustible
and are reaching a critical point.
