Subject: TWL: Dingy & motor

As Rich Gano points out, weight and deck storage area can be a limiting
factor on dinghy & motor selection. This becomes a larger problem when one
considers the increase in weight associated with the 4-stroke engines. I
must admit to having the advantage of adequate storage space on top of the
rear sundeck and the ease of an electric crane to raise and lower the dinghy
and motor. I was initially concerned about the addition of some 275 pounds
at the higher level which could adversely effect the rolling motion of the
boat, but those concerns seem to have been unfounded as I have noticed no
difference in the boats motion since the addition. I do remove the fuel
tank from the dinghy before hoisting in order to lower the weight.
The one adverse problem with my configuration is that the combined weight of
the heavier 4-stroke, 114 lbs, coupled with my weight, about 185 lbs,
places too much weight aft in the dinghy and when operating alone I get
quite a thrill as the bow rears up when I accelerate it up on plane. I am
going to make the addition of an extension on the tiller in order to be able
to get my weight more forward which should eliminate that problem.
