The original successes for some boaters were with Penaten Baby Creme, not
Desitin.
Both contain zinc oxide which was thought to be responsible for success in
retarding marine growth. However further experiments seem to point that the
actual base creme is what makes the difference. Penaten Creme contains
lanolin and is very sticky. Desitin is quite soft and will wash off more
readily and as far as I know does not contain lanolin.
From Australia, the home of lanolin (sheeps wool fat), now comes an
indication that it's the actual wool fat that prohibits marine growth. I
followed that advise and coated all exposed metal with anhydrous lanolin. I
haul about every two years, repeat the coating/smearing and have no critters
to speak off. Please however keep in mind, that I'm in fresh water
(Zebra-Mussel country) and that our water temperature does not get very warm,
even in Mid-July.

P.s: I have no connection to Penaten Creme, other than that my mama used to
coat my bottom with it when I was a baby and so did zillions of European
mothers. Most of their babys did not suffer from the heartbreak of
diaper-rash! ;-)
