Subject: TWL: Cayenne Pepper report
From: Richard (capnrich@XXX.XXX)

Well my boat is out of the water so I can finally report on the great
Cayenne pepper experiment.
The boat was painted with Pacific Sailor (cheap) hard paint mixed with 1/4
lb of powdered Cayenne pepper bought from Safeway.
Boat was in salt water (Tacoma and La Conner)
Painted September 2000.
Inspected by a diver and pronounced good in May of 2001. Scrubbed with a
garage broom and long handle at the dock in May 2001 and October 2001.
Results
In the spring the boat sprouts a fair amount of slime and green plant stuff
which seems to wash off each time I go out.
On the hard it was obvious that the paint worked well except in an area
which was not well covered. The difference of this area is quite remarkable
both because of paint colour change and the presence of barnacles only in
this area. Assuming that this is an application failure (only one coat was
applied) I would have to say that this combination works and is economical
(Pacific Sailor is real cheap paint).
It may also be that La Conner is a more bio-active area than Tacoma.
On most of the boat, the existing paint looks good to go for another season
except for the results of the too vigorous power wash.
What am I going to do now?
Try to get three years out of Trinidad SM.
