IMHO, the answer here is both yes and no. The main cause of most of the
major problems resultant from dirty fuel is directly related to the age of
the fuel. Diesel that sits around in a metal tank is subject to not only
development of algae problems but diesel itself starts to break down after a
certain period of time. So, I think it really boils down to how often the
fuel in your tanks gets turned over, which is directly related to how much
you use the boat. Big sport fishers that carry huge amounts of fuel, but
are used weekly, if not daily, rarely develop the fuel problems of the type
trawler owners experience.

Answer, the more you use your boat and keep the fuel turned over and "fresh"
the fewer problems you will experience. On the other hand if you let your
boat sit around for months at a time with the same old fuel in the tanks you
are going to have problems to deal with.
