On my old boat which did not have an anchor winch, I solved the
problem of getting a grip on thin lines by purchasing a climbing
tool called "Ascender Grips".
These are essentially camlocks with handle grips attached. There
is also a hole in the metal grip to which you can attach a block and
tackle for added leverage.
There are a lot of line aboard a boat in the 7/16" - 9/16" diameter
size which is what these ascender grips are designed to fit.
The tools are available at any of the Outdoor Sports stores catering
to the rock climbing sport. If there are no such located in your area
check the magazine stands for magazines aimed at this sport.
There will be a number of mail order companies who can supply the
gear.
