TWL: Fuel Manifolds

New boats usually come from the factory with large custom made fuel
manifolds for supply and return from/to multiple tanks and multiple
engines/generators/heaters, etc. When these systems are being removed and
replaced with changed plumbing configurations for whatever reason,
installers often just use standard plumbing fittings, pipes and valves.
This eliminates any "volume" effect that the manifold may have provided.
For example, in a simple piping system without manifold, would the draw from
an engine potentially prevent a generator from receiving any fuel? Where is
the dividing line between a piping only system and a manifold based system.
And how do you calculate the specific needs of a particular system of tanks,
engines and generators?

I'm Looking for ideas before changing an existing system. The current
system has a single large supply manifold for all tanks and all
engines/generators, and a single return manifold. The port and starboard
tanks/engines are NOT separated. If a port and starboard tank are both
opened, then the returned fuel will favor the tank with the least resistance
in the lines, the boat will heal and the fuel will overflow out the vent.
Neither of which is recommended.
