There has long been an argument within the s-------t racing community over
whether a locked or free spinning prop has less drag. Most of the research
shows that a locked prop has less drag than a spinning prop. At least this is
true for most cases. The exception seems to be when the spinning prop turns
exceptionally easily, apparently without the resistance of cutless bearings
and a gearbox. So you twin engined boat owners who want to shut down one
engine should note that locking the unpowered prop will save a bit of fuel as
well as easing anxieties about tearing up the reverse gear.
