Yes, I keep an awl in my paint kit for exactly that purpose. I can
punch the holes with a blow from the heel of my hand; no need for a
hammer.
However, I don't punch the holes so that I can wipe my brush on the
can lip. Call me a purist, by I would never dip a brush in the
storage container. Better to pour enough varnish for ten or fifteen
minutes work through a paint filter into a small jar or paper cup,
cap the original storage container, and work from the jar/cup. When
through, any remainder in the jar/cup is discarded, never poured back
into the storage container.
This way the storage container always contains the "virgin" material.
YMMV.
