<I will be demonstrating this system at the Poulsbo Trawler Fest aboard
the Loon Song.>

G'day Bob, I have a very stable working DSL wireless link from my wife's
office to our boat. The distance is about 900' and has a few palm trees and
lots of sailboat masts in the visual path.

I have no problem operating at the 11 mbs number and cannot tell the
difference between a direct Ethernet connect to the DSL or the wireless.
I to tried several brands of the 802 b variety. SMC, Lucent, D Link, and a
couple of others. Spent a lot of time and money trying to get this to work.
Most vendors would say "too far" for our product even tho the literature
said 1000, 1500, or even 1800 ft.

I stumbled on the Cisco 350 series of Access Points and wireless PCMCIA
cards, voila! Piece of cake. 1500' is no problem outside and 300' inside. I
can connect with my laptop in the bilge, below the waterline, to the AP 900'
away! But I prefer to do so in the pilothouse ;-)

So my conclusion is that there are lots of producers of this gear but not
all are "industrial strength". I'm very happy with the Cisco units and
several others have used the same ones are also happy users.

We are trying a set-up in another location soon with about 20 users from one
AP about 2000' max away. These are all on boats in the harbor and it will be
interesting to see if it works as well as my set-up. I keep the list posted
:-)

No interest in any of these products yada yada......just a satisfied user
with a need for high-speed interconnect on our boat!

Cheers
Dave
