I have been using the Apple Airport system in my home office for about a
year. The central unit costs about $200, and each computer card about $100.
All current Mac computers and laptops are configured for the system and all
recent OS software will run it flawlessly. Because of this built in facility,
my total expense has been only for the wireless hardware, a shade less than
$600. So far I have it installed on a desktop G4 Mac and three G3 Powerbooks.
I can surf the Internet and access the printer and other accessories from any
computer. Theoretically, all computers can use the link at the same time but
we rarely use more than two at once. The maximum reliable range I get is
about 100 feet from the hub. This is sufficient to let me work in the garden
when the weather is nice. So far it has been entirely trouble free without
interference from garage openers, portable phones, electronic dog fences,
etc. Then again, we live in a semi-rural area, reasonably distant from
neighbors and commerical enterprises. I'm not sure how well it would work in
a crowded marina with boats only a few feet apart.
