Jim, I have been Surveying, amongst others of course, the boats you mention
for over twenty some years.
People call us and ask "What do you think of Bayliner? Or Marine Trader?" I
know they're asking because they are considering purchasing the boat, and
they're asking because of what they heard from the many sages on any given
dock during cocktail hours. Some of what they hear is quite negative, albeit
for the most part is seldom more than hot air from unqualified mouths.
My response is always: There are "Monday's" boats in every make and model!
Al Johnson on the list suggested maintenance factor being more important
than the make of the boat. Nothing could be closer to the truth!
While builders may differ from each other in that quality of the product
seems to be more consistent from the high end builders, when you're buying a
used boat for coastal cruising, her condition will likely be more resultant
of the previous owners' knowledge and boating experience, than her builder's
work ethics. IOW if there were deficiencies with the boat from the factory,
a knowledgeable owner would have had it all rectified by the time you end up
with the boat. Equally, a perfectly well built boat coming from a high end
builder can go to hell by the time it's yours, due to a previous owner's
neglect.
So, my advise is to go with what ever your financial means dictate. What is
more important than the make or model of your quarry, is to develop a
relationship with a qualified Surveyor in your area who is not afraid to
consult with you in regards to these matters. This kind of "consultation" is
basically verbal advise and should not cost you anything, however the
Surveyor may be able to point you in the direction of particular boats that
night be more suitable to your needs than others. Then when you find an
individual that "turns you on", the Surveyor can determine if she is worth
to pursue.
Please note that I'm writing this in light of your needs for a "coastal
cruiser" with no intentions of "ocean crossing just yet" as you put it.
As an ex sailor, you might be inclined to think that the same low priced
used boat you bought for coastal cruising can cross oceans when you're
ready, because that is true for sailboats. Not so with trawlers.
If and when you want to go offshore in a motor boat, you'll have to switch
to one capable of doing so, and there will be no "low priced" options.
