Hi Rick,

You or your friend can find a PDF "Operations and Maintenance Manual" for
5411, 5416, 5424, and 5432 model Atomic Diesels at:

http://members.shaw.ca/alohaoa/manuals/UNIVERSAL_ATOMIC_DIESEL.pdf

The manual recommends an API "CD" rated oil in either 30wt or 10W40. Since
10W40 oils are primarily intended for gasoline engines I would amend the
recommendation to 15W40 since these oils are made for diesel service.

You indicated that the boat has a DD 2-stroke main engine. If your friend
wants to use one oil in both engines the following products or their
equivalents will give good service:

Chevron DELO 400 30
Citgo Citgard 500 30
Citgo Citgard 600 30
Exxon XD3 30
Exxon XD3 Extra 30
Mobil Delvac 1230
Shell Rotella T-30
Texaco Ursa Super Plus 30

All of these oils are rated for both 2-stroke and 4-stroke diesel engines
and all have a low enough sulphated ash number to satisfy the DD
recommendation.

If he insists on using a 40wt oil in his DD then IMHO he'll need two oils. I
wouldn't feel comfortable using a heavier than recommended oil in genset
service.

Googly yours,

Alex
