My experience with a runaway diesel is in a VW Rabbit. Years ago, it
decided to suck all the crankcase oil past the rings (or somewhere). Don't
know why-maybe the oil was too thin?? Anyway, it took off like a banshee.
Brakes wouldn't stop it and pushing in the clutch only made the engine rev
higher. After a 3 mile ride from He**, all the crankcase oil was depleted
and it shut down. Filled up the oil and all was fine after that. Junked it
3 months later but the problem didn't return in the interim.

On our Detroits, we have the airbox shutdowns. I've made sure they work and
check them every 60 days or so. Not with the engines running, just at dock
to be sure the cables and linkage are working freely. Should we ever have a
runaway, I'll be glad they are there. I could only imagine loosing a blower
seal and running on 7 gallons of 'crankcase fuel' without a governor. In my
opinion, these shutdowns are as valuable as a life vest. Don't ever want to
have to use it, but if I do, I'll be very glad I had it available. I've
heard this is more prevelent with turbo seals blowing out.
Just my opinion....... for what it's worth.

Chris
