I had a lovely New Years cruise up through the San Juan
Islands. I was motoring home Tuesday when my crew and I both smelled
smoke and noticed a blue cloud following the boat. My first though
was that I had lost raw water cooling, the alarm on the injection
elbow had failed, and I was burning up my exhaust house just like Joe
did. I took a quick peek in the engine compartment and didn't see any
fire so I felt the exhaust riser with my hand where the water is
injected. It wasn't too hot so water was still flowing.
I went back on deck and there was still lots of smoke so I
shut down the engine and unfurled the jib to get the boat under sail.
There was still lots of smoke. I unzipped the cockpit enclosure and
took a better look. The smoke was coming from the heater exhaust!
My Wallace heater had just flamed out and was just going
through its restart routine. I started the engine back up, furled my
jib, and was on my way very glad that all was well.
