One I can answer!! I worked for Dupont in the Teflon(RTM) plant for
about 7 years prior to retirement and can definitively state that
Teflon(RTM) or any other polytetrafluoroethylene will not galvanicaly
react with steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc. at any temperature it is
likely to encounter on board a boat, even if the seal water is lost. As
stated elsewhere there are a couple of different types of PTFE packings:
impregnated flax types and the Gore-Tex materials. W.L. Gore uses
Dupont Teflon(RTM) using proprietary, patented technology to make the
Gore-Tex materials. I believe that it is the best packing material
available. We (Dupont) have used it for years as seal packing in
chemical plants where there is NO cooling and exposure to much more
serious environments than water.
