There are several PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene= Teflon) impregnated packing
materials: One is the traditional fax material, the other is synthetic--in
some cases Gortex material. I feel that the synthetic seems to last longer
and require very infrequent adjustment of the stuffing box. The PTFE
material that I coat the shaft with is Syn-Tef stuffing box lubricant. When
the shaft is turning there should be a few drops a minute to allow cooling.
I have never used any graphite material or the more solid Syn Tef moldable
material. Traditional flax packing is coated with a wax like lubricant.
