Howdy,
Mark has raised an excellent point here.
In almost three years as the TWL snip nazi I've come to realize that the
majority of our membership is quite conscientious about this issue. I've
kept informal but pretty accurate records over the years and I've never seen
my tracking list exceed 10% of the list membership; Further, I've never had
occasion to send more than a dozen "snip notices" in any given month.
The other side of that coin is that the notices that I do send out tend to
go to the same people over and over again. These recidivists (as I
affectionately think of them) also are usually the ones that respond by
accusing me of censoring them or of simply being a jerk. They sometimes will
claim that the rules are wrong, unfair, burdensome, or shouldn't apply to
them personally. As you might imagine, this eventually becomes tiresome.
Mark's post indicates that perhaps I'm not as out of touch as many of my
recidivists have been claiming.
Nonetheless, my old system has become ineffective so I've instituted a
substitute: I'm asking TWListees to send me ( alexh@XXX.XXX ) complaints
about specific posts and I'll pass it along to the appropriate person
WITHOUT using the complainer's name. Perhaps it will make more of an
impression if my 'dings' are based on anonymous complaints from the
membership at large. OTOH: Maybe Mark and I are the only ones who care about
this issue.
Either way, I'm OK with it.
Demurely yours,
Alex
