Subject: Re: TWL: Repacking Rudder Stuffing Box

The Teflon packing is used extensively on SS shafts, as well as alloy
shafts--there is absolutely no reason that Teflon would cause a "galvanic
action". As for heat build up, although this could potentially be a problem
in prop shafts, the packing is adjusted as any other: tighten just enough to
stop the drip at rest. The heat problem and leaking is present in any
material if over tightened. A rudder shaft has very little motion and there
should be no heat build up there.
