Joe,
    Normally three rings are used. Cut the ends at a bevel when on the
shaft with a razor blade or Exacto Knife. Stagger the cuts as you put the
packing in. Remove the old packing first. Now days I always use the teflon
impregnated packing, and put some teflon grease on the shaft as I slide each
ring in place. I also put a small amount of the grease on the last ring.
