There is an excellent shareware program called GPSUtility available at
Web Site = http://www.gpsu.co.uk/ which up/down loads from Garmin GPS
units as well as several others. It can also incorporate extracted coast
line data and some maps (never used the map feature but did use coast
line extractions) for a good pictorial view on your computer. The
registered version (I think the fee is around $30.00) allows up to 5000
waypoints and I think 20 routes (not sure of the route #).

I used it for about a year after creating my own spreadsheet to keep
track of course, distance, etc, and entering the waypoints and routes
manually! What a PITA compared to this and other software that will do
all of that AND upload to your GPS. Much more accurate, and when
combined with a map or coast line extraction it works very well as a
double check on the location of the waypoint/route - I found several
errors on planned routes and waypoint locations when I was planning a
trip to New England two summers ago.

I only stopped using it when I bought a Garmin 162 and software about a
year ago. The shareware program, however, will work with almost all
Garmins, including the 162, if you don't want to buy the Garmin software
(which includes maps, but not charts).
